Marco Paggi received his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 2001 and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering in 2005 from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. After a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Politecnico di Torino from 2005 to 2007, he became Assistant Professor of Structural Mechanics in the same University (2007-2013). He spent the year 2010 as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in the Institute of Continuum Mechanics of the Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany. Since November 2013 he is Associate Professor of Structural Mechanics at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy, where he was member of the Academic Council from November 2013 to December 2015 and he serves as Director’s Delegate for Research and Technology Transfer since December 2015. He is the representative of the IMT School in the Board of the Joint Technology Transfer Office (together with Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and Scuola Normale Superiore), since February 15, 2016.
He has been appointed visiting Professor in the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca during October 2013, visiting Full Professor in the Laboratoire de Modélisation et Simulation Multi Echelle of the Université Paris EST during May 2014, visiting scholar in the Solids and Structural Mechanics Group at the University of Trento during October 2015 and April 2016.
He is an Elected Member of the Executive Committee of the Mechanics of Materials Group of the Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics since September 2015. He has been an Elected Member of the Executive Board of the Italian Group of Fracture, 2009-2011 & 2011-2013. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science since 2014, Member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design since 2011, Member of the Editorial Review Board of the journal Frontiers in Mechanics of Materials since 2014, Member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences since 2015, Member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group for the category Chemical Physics since 2015, Member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Solids and Structures since 2016.
He has been recipient of the Young Scientist Award by the European Structural Integrity Society in 2010. Since March 2013 he is a nominated Member of the Young Academy of Europe.
He is the principal investigator of an ERC Starting Grant 2012 and an ERC Proof of Concept 2016 by the European Research Council. He has been the principal investigator of a Vigoni Project 2010 in collaboration with Prof. P. Wriggers from the Leibniz University of Hannover and of a FIRB Futuro in Ricerca 2010 project granted by MIUR.
He served as peer-reviewer of research proposals for the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD), the National Council for Scientific Research of Romania, the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the Czech Science Foundation.
He is member of the Task 13 Committee on Performance and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems of the International Energy Agency, Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme (IEA-PVPS) since October 2014.
At IMT Lucca he is the director of the research unit Multi-scale Analysis of Materials (MUSAM) and of the PhD curriculum in Computational Mechanics for the 29th cycle. His research interests span various areas of continuum mechanics, with special focus on computational methods for nonlinear partial differential equations, interface mechanical problems, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, material models for renewable energy applications, multi-physics simulations.
