A basic sense of self depends on the processing of sensory and motor signals that accompany almost every bodily activity. My research attempts to explain why and how percepts of action and bodily states are so clearly and inexorably “mine”. Sensory events related to one’s own body (e.g. touch) are said to be characterized by a sense of body-ownership, and motor events generated by one’s own body (e.g. actions) by a sense of agency.
The main focus of my research is to empirically identify the basic neurocognitive principles governing the sense of agency and body-ownership, and the interaction between them.
My research is inter-disciplinary, based on neuroscientific and psychological experimental paradigms as well as on neurophilosophical approaches to selfhood.

  • PhD, University of Manchester, 2000-2003. Thesis title: “Use, Refuse or Lock Them Up? A history of Italian Academic Refugees in Britain, 1930-1950”

I am interested in the recent science and technology, especially in connection with the emergence of ‘big science’ and the development of international relations. I am pursuing an interdisciplinary research programme which aims to provide a novel picture of the relations existing between the scientific community, the international diplomacy and the intelligence agencies, especially during the post-WW2 period and the Cold War years. I am also looking for ways to take these historical reflections into the present examining for instance the legacy of debates and policies on climate and environmental change, and atomic energy.

I am an Assyriologist who focuses on the history of Mesopotamia in the first millennium BC. This was the time of Sargon, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, and Alexander the Great – a time of great political transformations that affected an immense area from the Mediterranean to the Indus. I am particularly interested in the establishment of the Persian Empire in Babylonia and the reactions that this process triggered among different social groups. My ERC project evaluated the Babylonian context of the Judean deportees who returned home after the fall of Babylon to build the Second Temple of Jerusalem.

5th Annual Meeting of the Young Academy of Europe, 2016: an update from the Board

Dear Members of the Young Academy of Europe,

Some of us are just back from the Annual General Meeting which took place at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Those who were there will agree that it has been a wonderful occasion and a feast in celebration of excellent scholarship, good company and delicious food!

The Board would like to thank Nicole Grobert and the outgoing Board of the YAE whole heartily for their efforts in organising this event. For those who have not been there, please see the photo to get an idea as to what you have missed…

As you may know, the AGM programme also included election to some four vacant positions at the Board and one vacant position of the chair. Members of the Board who stepped down are Alban Kellerbauer, Andre Mischke, Christian Doeller, and Christian Keysers. Their contribution and countless efforts on behalf of the YAE were enormous. We owe them a great debt of thanks and hope that we will be able to benefit from their expertise also in the future.

Following the outcome of the election, the composition of the new board for 2016/17 is as follows:

yae-board-2016

Chair – Hagit Amirav
Vice Chair – Sven Bestmann
Vice Chair Outgoing – Nicole Grobert
Treasurer – Sebastian Leidel

Chair of Selection Committee – Angela Casini
Chair PE – Yan Lavalle
Vice Chair PE – Marcel Swart
Chair LS – Caroline Lynn Kamerlin
Vice Chair LS – Mangala Srinivas
Chair SH – Alexander Fidora
Vice Chair SH – Monica Brinzei

We hope to see you all in the next AGM, which will be co-organised with Academia Europaea and held in Budapest, 4-6 September 2017.

With best wishes, also on behalf of YAE Board

Open letter to European Parliament opposing budget cuts to frontier science

The Young Academy of Europe reaches out to the European Parliament in an open letter to express its extreme concern about plans to cut the ERC budget by 221 M€. While the Academy is very much in favour of stimulating the European economy, doing so at the cost of frontier science and innovation is short-sighted. See the open letter for more information.

Young Academies criticise disbanding of EU Chief Scientific Adviser post

The Young Academy of Europe joins several national young academies in an open letter to Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission. The letter criticises the decision to abolish the position of Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). The initiative of the Young Academy of Sweden is being supported by the YAE as well as the young academies of Poland and Scotland. The signatories stress that the establishment of the post of CSA by President Barroso in 2012 was an important step forward to augment the quality of the European Commission’s decision-making process. Consideration of scientific results and thinking plays a pivotal role in identifying threats and creating policies that improve people’s lives. The academies also express concern that disbanding the office of the CSA followed an intense campaign from interest groups whose opinions were disfavoured by scientific assessments made by the CSA. Finally, the academies emphasise the importance of EU policy being informed by independent scientific advice, and asks President Juncker to reinstall the CSA or a corresponding function as soon as possible. In November 2014 Juncker announced that a new centre – European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) – would replace the Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA) of which the CSA Anne Glover has been part. The new policy-oriented centre does not include a CSA, a fact which the academies consider a significant degradation. See the open letter for more information.
